Vance Hughes

Coach Hughes is the head girls basketball coach and assistant campus coordinator. While at Saginaw, Coach Hughes has led his teams to the playoffs in four of his first seven seasons. He is the all-time winningest coach at Saginaw with 109 wins and counting, and needs just 14 wins to surpass 400 in his career. 

Coach Hughes was the 1981 Trans American Athletic Newcomer of the Year at McMurry University in Abilene, TX. From there, he transferred to Henderson County Junior College in Athens, TX where he helped lead the men’s basketball team to the first-ever national tournament, and an appearance in the Final Four where they placed 3rd overall.

Before coming to Saginaw, Hughes served as the head basketball coach for both boys and girls programs in various districts. His experience in class 4A, 5A, and 6A school districts is invaluable, leaving a trail of victories along the way. His successes include; a 4A state title at Waxahachie High School, 2 state final runner-up titles at Kennedale High School, and multiple district championships and playoff appearances. In 2005, Coaches Hughes also founded the select basketball organization, Texas Dream Team Basketball Club.

Coach Hughes' wife Corinne is a teacher and coach at Arlington ISD. He has five children: Antwan Kirk-Hughes, a Parade All-American from Waxahachie High School. He earned a scholarship to the University of Texas, and went free agent to play football for the San Diego Chargers; Vantranique Hughes, the Texas High School 4A player of the year in 2006 and WBCA All-American Honorable mention who earned a scholarship to the University of Texas; Destini Hughes, Texas High School 3A player of the year, Parade and McDonald’s All-American from Kennedale High School. She earned a scholarship to Louisiana State University; Jamaika Hughes a two-time TABC All-State player from Kennedale High School who earned a scholarship to Texas Tech University; and Vance Hughes II was named TABC All-State Player from Kennedale High School and earned a scholarship to Trinity Valley Community College.
